Casey Calvert meet Huffington Post

Published April 23, 2014 | By caseycalvert

I’ve been following the Belle Knox story pretty closely ever since the news broke. I was on set for James Avalon, and Koga (who’s job description I can best describe as the awesome Asian man who hangs out on set and takes polaroids and other pictures of us) showed me the original article. I had no idea the story would blow up into the tabloid sensation it is now.

But the more and more it developed, the more and more frustrated I got. Belle’s media attention didn’t bother me, because I just can’t get upset when mainstream press pays attention to one of us. And I wanted to support her, I really did. But as time went on, and she did more and more interviews, I just couldn’t. There were too many things she said (and did) that really didn’t sit right with me.

This article pushed me to the edge. I know the author meant well, but you just can’t start an article about other porn stars in college with a girl who is in cosmetology school. You just can’t.

And that’s why I decided to make my list. I wanted to keep it focused, so I made parameters — female porn stars who have graduated from college or who are still in school. I know there are lots of smart porn stars (Asia Carrera comes to mind) who never graduated, but I left them out because including them would also mean including anyone who attended community college for a semester before dropping out. And I left out guys because, whether we want to admit it or not, female porn stars face more discrimination in the real world than male porn stars.

Before I could write what I was intending to write, this article came out. It was the final straw. It was time for me to get my words out there.

So I did.

You can read my Huffington Post article here. Please comment, post it on Facebook and Twitter, and spread the word.  The more clicks my article gets, the more opportunities I will have to do this kind of thing in the future.

Also, this is my first official byline. It’s pretty fucking cool.

Huffington Post describes belle knox in the following way: “Belle Knox is an “acclaimed porn performer”, a feature dancer, and a student at Duke University.though i really like belle knox(ardent fan) ,i wonder how she became an acclaimed porn performer(acclaimed porn performers according to me r sasha grey, jenna haze, alexis texas, nina hartley, jenna jameson.lisa ann…who have been in the industry 4r quite a long time & marked a deep impact). The mainstream media by exaggerating her is doing more harm to her in the long run…she is an 18yrs old..not seen much of the world…may get carried away by the instant fame,Remember quick money doesn.t last 4r a long time.It is high time that the media stop focussing on her(here i mean both knox-miriam & amanda) & instead highlight other issues.

I really liked the article on Huffington Post, congrats on the byline!

You are clearly an intelligent, confident person who enjoys and takes pride in what she is doing. And that is what makes you successful, just as it would in any other career path be it an athlete, a stage performer, a chef, an accountant, a teacher, etc. Yes your physical beauty helps, just as coordination would help an athlete or mathematical competency would help an accountant, but your enthusiasm for what you are doing makes the difference.

As you point out, what gets lost in the “controversy” of porn is that there are people who genuinely enjoy doing it, and I think there are some related misconceptions about the reasons for watching it. Sure we all enjoy the physical aspect of it, me included. But there are those of us who find additional reasons/motivations to watch and hopefully that will be explored someday as well.

Hi, Casey. I’m curious about what you disliked about Belle’s article in HuffPo? You said it was the last straw, but what was it that you disagreed with her about? I’d be curious to know, because I liked both your recent article in HuffPo as well as her article. It seemed to me that you were both making similar points. Thanks. And keep being an awesome person.

Hello Casey, I commend you for taking your stand and expressing your personal viewpoints, experiences and status on being who you are in both your private life and professional life, which happens to be in an industry, society has completely engulfed with double standards and prejudgments, so inaccurate and falsely researched, that your voice and the point you make, unfortunately falls upon ears, which can hear but doesn’t listen. And why, as advanced as our species has grown, we are as primitive as our ignorant bigotry which still runs rampant in our lives, shows. I admire and view the people in this industry with high regard, recognize every one as individuals, knowing it possesses the good and bad that every other industry on this planet has. I am a fan of your work, for some time, and now I am also a fan of you.
